The Talented Hermit Thrush
"Hermie" has been on a tear this year. This Hermit Thrush found our feeders several years ago and each season has developed greater skills at the feeders. A bird that once could only leap and hope for a quick snag of food can now get a decent grip on the feeder and eat a fair amount. Very impressive for a "bird brain", and suggestive of a memory good enough to recall skills months after last using them. But birds only live so long, and I do not know if Hermie is passing on skills and if this marvelously talented bird is working on one of its last seasons with us. We shall see.
