There's a window box on the east side of our sunroom (a spot chosen to be squirrel-unfriendly) that's a popular spot for House Finches. Two finches, in particular (or so I surmise). And this couple does as well as the Honeymooners. "Ralph" is a fairly bad tempered rascal (he's in the photo) but "Alice" is even more unpleasant. And she has the upper hand for sure. Both finches fight---a universal House Finch characteristic?--but "Alice" usually kicks Ralph out of the box and he doesn't do much more than complain loudly from the nearby Japanese Maple.
It's so odd to see birds fight over a little box when there are no less than six nearby feeders that hold black oil sunflower seed. None of these bad mannered birds is ever going to go hungry. So just perhaps this pair of House Finches enjoys the give and take of a Honeymooner-esque spat. And just perhaps "Alice" keeps "Ralph" honest.
