Low Winter Bird Counts
It seems the winter of 2011 is coming out as a bust. Not only are we not seeing any irruptive species (e.g. Red Breasted Nuthatches, Pine Siskins, Purple Finches) but even the mainline winter birds (e.g. Yellow Rumped Warblers, Hermit Thrushes, Slate Colored Juncos) are not coming by with much of a frequency. Well, I can forgive the juncos as they are not quite feeder birds, but what gives with the YRWs and HTs? Hermie showed up fairly early and now I haven't seen it in many days. The warblers are quite irregular as well. I'm guessing there are plenty of "normal" things to eat and the feeders don't need to serve as anything but hard times food. So my happiness at a moderate winter is being compensated for by a dearth of cool birds. Such is life. Darn it.
