Since July ’08 I have been exclusively using a hot pepper suet dough at our feeder stations. The rollout was inspired by an experiment to discourage
sciurus carolinensis by (temporarily) eliminating use of sunflower seed and also using food products reportedly rejected by the Squirrels. Both safflower seed and this inexpensive hot pepper suet met that test. Even the “Cajun” Squirrels who were undeterred by foodstuffs treated with powdered cayenne still do not bother with the suet, even in the winter. Just as good a piece of news is that every bird species I previously recorded at suet baskets accepted the change. A win-win here at the land of Cary BirdCam! Viva Hot Pepper!
