The Brown Headed Nuthatch, found exclusively in the southeast U.S., is a regular -- even daily -- visitor to my feeder stations and is attracted to peanut butter, suet, sunflower seeds, and peanut pieces. I have photographed them with the BirdCam in all seasons, although I picked them up on camera more often during the cooler months. But they are camera magnets! The only species I’ve recorded on BirdCam on more days were Carolina Chickadees, Carolina Wrens, Eastern Bluebirds, House Finches, and Northern Cardinals. While our home backs up to a Loblolly Pine-rich buffer, my belief is that our BHN’s are likely roosting and nesting a bit farther away in our part of town where pine stands are thicker and more mature. I have not seen any evidence of them hollowing out nests in any of our decayed timber. We’re glad to see them here and I’m building up a nice collection of photographs of this delightful Sittid.
