Juncos! Juncos! Juncos!

A Piedmont winter without Juncos would be a sad season indeed. There is something endearing about these characters and I do my best to set up an attractive spread for them. This winter they have made good use of a platform feeder set up on the deck that is regularly stocked with Safflower and Millet seed, but they cheerfully attack any “stray” seeds that end up on the deck planking itself. They also enjoy our compost piles and natural area where I see them hopping about early every morning. I also find Juncos fascinating as photographic subjects. They have proven difficult to shoot! For reasons unclear to me many of my BirdCam photos of Juncos simply aren’t routinely crisp and clear, although other birds photographed the same day at the same range come through much better. Soon they will migrate to the mountains. I will miss them!

Juncos ARE hard to capture and I think it's because they are always moving!! I've tried too but they do seem to thwart my efforts!
