Observations of Hummers in Conflict

The weekend's BirdCam shoot yielded a dramatic photo of two female Ruby Throated Hummingbirds in conflict at the southwest nectar feeder. I've seen fights before---many of them---almost always between females, albeit only once in 2009. They're exceptionally territorial and in past I'm accustomed to a female taking "ownership" of at least one feeder and ruthlessly driving off any interloper. But never before had I had a BirdCam photo of one of these scraps. In so doing I can observe a peculiar splay of tail feathers on each bird which I surmise is an aggressive posture. So again, the Wingscapes BirdCam enables close study of the birds and a continual learning experience, even among the birds of our own back yards.
