Another Surprise Visitor

It has been a strange weekend. I've seen a distinct uptick in feeder activity, rather fewer squirrels than usual, and visits by birds I don't expect to see in the summer. The latest surprise was a drop-in by a Brown Headed Nuthatch. While these guys are year-round in the Piedmont they aren't the kind of birds I expect to see except in winter. My last confirmed sighting took place on March 13th. My logbook also shows a single sighting between Memorial Day and Halloween. I have no reason to believe natural provender is getting thin. Perhaps this bird needed a little variety in the diet and a bit of suet nugget hit the spot. But who knows? We watch and enjoy their visits whatever the cause. There's always a good meal to be had here.
