In Matthew 10:29 Christ asks if two sparrows are not sold for a penny. Many contemporaries hold sparrows in such low esteem. But the same passage recalls that they are not forgotten by God, and neither should we fail to appreciate these humble little birds. I am quite fond of sparrows, but often don't get to see them close up. Happily I have started seeing Chipping Sparrows around the feeders, although I have seen them now and then about the yard and compost piles all summer. They're so fun to watch. These little balls of energy hop about, poke and probe this or that. And they are doing their part to keep the insect population down. They're not colorful, or flashy, but they are a perfect delight. Two for a penny? c'mon!
