It has been getting very, very quiet here, in bird terms, with one critical exception. My photo counts regardless of feeder are coming down fast and in these last days of summer I am regularly seeing only Mourning Doves, Northern Cardinals, Carolina Wrens, and... Finches. That's House Finches and (presumably) one American Goldfinch family group. And they are tearing through the sunflower seed. I haven't replaced a suet cake in two weeks. I haven't needed to fill my main safflower seed feeder. But I confront empty sunflower tubes every morning. I'm not upset---sunflower seed is mercifully inexpensive--- but I am stupified at the prodigous appetites of these characters. I may do some measurements this weekend to see if I can calculate one bird's daily consumption. Do I dare?
