The Winter Solstice has come and gone, and we have not yet seen our first Yellow-Rumped Warbler of the season. But I am not too worried, as I have typically started seeing our only winter wood warblers very late in December. Last year my first BirdCam record was on 12/24. I am well prepared for these characters: suet is plentiful, as is the peanut butter (or what is left of it after the squirrels get their licks in!) That said, I should point out that the Yellow Rumpeds have been in Cary for some time: at least since early November. For whatever reason it seems to take them many weeks to notice my feeders. And thereupon they are omnipresent. As I write this I am keeping an eye on the feeder tree in hopes that this may be my lucky day and that these colorful (for winter!) songbirds will be on the scene.
