I enjoy spicy foods. So, it seems, do my backyard birds. In fact, they're so turned on by hot pepper suet that they only grudgingly eat anything else. The clearest evidence comes from examination of my "woodpecker-friendly" feeder (I bought
this one from Duncraft.) One side holds a hot suet cake, the other a "high energy" product. I've replaced the hot pepper cake three times in the current lifetime of the non-pepper product. The feeder is a constant: no variables need to be factored in for location. I can't think of a single species that doesn't prefer the hot pepper cake, including this gorgeous female Common Flicker. Yet, conversations with others disclose that their visitors will eat almost any suet, and some claim the high energy product is the top pick! Go figure. I don't understand it. But insasmuch as the squirrels are deterred by the hot pepper product, we are perfectly happy to purchase the popular cakes.
