Eight Sweet Megapixels

One of the big incentives for me to acquire the BirdCam 2.0 was its eight megapixel resolution capability, and I have been working to make use of the possibility of some very fine detail. When the light is right, the results can be stunning. Consider this photograph of a Brown-Headed Nuthatch taken at a distance of just over 36 inches. Even cropped to less than 10% of its original acreage, the image is packed with very clean detail. I start to wonder that if I focus at a closer subject (perhaps within a foot) I might be able to make out any mites in a bird's feathers! With this degree of resolution we can reasonably expect to reproduce images at an 8" x 10" and possibly larger as long as the image is not too heavily cropped. I'm finally giving serious thought to publishing some bird-centered photographic art and doing so begs getting off the old 4x6 frame standard. These are sweet megapixels indeed! Love that BirdCam 2.0!
