The peoples of Scandinavia traditionally feed the birds on Christmas Day to ensure good luck throughout the year. Even tossing a small amount of seed on the doorstep is supposed to do the trick. Well, I don't know about that. I am of Swedish extraction and don't think spreading a little seed on the doorstep is going to determine one's year, even if I have put out plenty of seed in my time and have been a pretty fortunate fellow in almost all respects. But what the heck: on this Christmas Day I made sure to toss out some seed on the deck -- and keep the feeders full. It's raining and cold, and the birds will appreciate a little extra lift. And to them and to all of my friends and followers, I wish a hearty God Jul! (a little Swedish lingo, there.)
