I mastered sufficient mathematics in my school days to understand the concept of a
Fibonacci number sequence. I might have reached an understanding much more quickly had I studied the distribution of squirrels at bird feeders over time. At the outset the feeder is persuaded that there is only one animal raiding his sunflower seed feeders. Then there are several. And then even more. And late in winter, well, you add a bunch more still. Study this photograph. This is why. Two members of the wretched species
sciurus carolinensis establish a nest and conspire to foist even more sunflower seed raiders on the exasperated bird feeder. And they do this twice a year, sometimes three. Oh, swell.
