Toting Up Winter Species

By my reckoning we will reach the deepest part o f winter this weekend (the point where the historic average temperature is lowest), and I expect I am also seeing all the winter species I am likely to see here this outing. At least in terms of what has been photographed on my BirdCam, this has been an unsurprising year. I have seen and photographed all of the basic winter species: Yellow Rumped Warblers, Ruby Crowned Kinglets, White Throated Sparrows, and Hermit Thrushes. I have not seen any of the irruptives I saw in past years, including the Pine Siskins and Red Breasted Nuthatches, let alone Purple Finches and Evening Grosbeaks and whatever else might come by in a tough winter. And my BirdCam species count for 2010 now stands at only 19. But it has been a great season. Traffic has been good, the action has been entertaining, and I am seeing old friends who will leave me in not many weeks. So what if I don't have the novel and unusual this time?
