This was an unhappy discovery on Saturday evening. At some point that afternoon one of our visiting songbirds was ambushed by a predator. It may be a normal part of nature, but I am nevertheless saddened that a feeder buddy is something else's dinner. What is sadder is that I could not supply too many details. One problem is that the evidence is sparse: there were only a handful of wingfeathers. My surmise based on color is that a Tufted Titmouse was the victim. And based on experience, I suspect a Cooper's Hawk. They've been observed here, and they seem to have great success with small gray birds. But that's also a guess. So another one is lost, a tough reminder that birdfeeders are both a blessing and a danger to our passerines. I'm pretty sure my feeders are close enough to cover and safety that I am not unnecessarily endangering visitors. Hopefully I won't be doing a CSI very often.
