A Sight Hitherto Unseen

I'm adding one more to the 2010 successful-fledgling count, and it's a youngster I have never seen before. I watched, over lunch, a classic fledgling-begging-and-receiving situation. At first I wondered if I had a House Finch youngster, but the parent was stuffing suet into that hungry maw, and the realization dawned that I was watching my first Pine Warbler chick, ever. We were definitely on the early side of the fledge as the attentive parent --the male, I am sure -- zipped back and forth (a great number of times) between the feeder and the chick, even as the chick moved from feeders to tree line. An exciting moment in a season of nest success. We now have observed eight distinct species of fledglings, and more are surely on the way.
