Gone Missing

Summer 2010 has been a rousing success at the feeders with a few exceptions. I am seeing a good number of species, lots of juveniles, and the traffic is solid. What's the problem? Chickadees are hard to find. Goldfinches are suddenly irregulars. But worst of all: My hummingbirds flat out disappeared. I saw birds at several nectar feeders in mid-May for some days. And then... nothing. The BirdCam hasn't seen them. And nor do I. Evidently the area hummers have a better territory elsewhere or there are fewer of them and are spread over a wide area. Or my stuff isn't appealing this time out. I'm going to watch a little longer, but the idea of taking down a couple of feeders is looking like a plan. I don't enjoy burning sugar for purpose. And this all goes to show: you just can't predict what the little jokers will do. Do I start saying "Better Luck Next Year!"?
