I have been amused this week by an apparent behavior at the pictured suet feeder. Two cakes of identical product were added on the same date. Today, one is gone, and the other is down to about half size. I watched the activity through BirdCam yesterday, and virtually every photo showed the birds picking at the crumbs on the right, often going to ludicrous extremes of contortion to get at them. So what's so great about the right side? Yup. That's the side opposite the house. I'm willing to bet that the birds seem to thing it's more private, or safer, working from that side of the feeder. I'm testing my hypothesis today. I did add a new cake, but I rotated the feeder so that the newer stuff is on the house side. I'm deeply curious to see what cake gets the attention. More as I learn it...Friday, August 13, 2010
