There isn't a whole lot to report from this weekend. It has been very quiet, as noted yesterday, and even the squirrels have been by only occasionally. But there was a highlight, and it was a great pleasure. For my on-again off-again Brown Headed Nuthatches were in the neighborhood, working the "sunny side" feeder station and running off with sunflower seeds. It wasn't hard to notice them: their "squeaky toy" call is very distinctive. Once I heard them, it didn't take long to find one (or two as the case would be.) I had assumed these pine forest specialists would favor our back yard with all its Loblollies. But this pair was hanging around at a lone Loblolly in my neighbor's front yard. We shall see more of them this winter, I am sure. Good to see them back...for a time.
