This weekend saw the completion of the bluebird box, on post. The 4x4 post went up last week, and Saturday I shopped for a nest box and a predator guard. I found a product made by "Houses for Bluebirds" which had some thoughtful features (vent holes, overhang roof) and which is based in a small town in Nash County to our east (about an hour's drive from here.) We were amused that almost immediately a Carolina Chickadee investigated the box. But we now must wait for the real tenants, and that's a six month wait for certain. In the meantime, the box will air and get imprinted on the local bird's topographic map, improving odds it will be used. We shall see the results...March 2011.
