It has been a long time since I last saw a Hairy Woodpecker here. A
long time. Our last sighting was almost a year ago, on November 17th. It may be one or more came by since then, but if so it was not when we or BirdCam were able to notice. My experience with these "Jumbo Downys" has been of less frequent visitation. They're around, and around all year, but for whatever reason don't seem to be greatly interested in our suet offerings. Every other woodpecker, save for the Yellow Bellied Sapsucker (which we
never see!) comes around fairly often if not daily. Do the Hairys have better luck with live prey? or do they find suet less attractive? Well, this one came and went, perhaps not to be seen for weeks, and I'm still no closer to an answer.

I just had a downy come in a couple of days ago but the hawk showed up and haven't seen it since. The downys are such a delighful but infrequent visitor. Hope to see more of them this winter. I've never had a Hairy show up. Loved your photo of one!
