For at least a little while, we are back to seasonal conditions in the Piedmont: sunny and warm days, cool nights, no freezing. And that seems to keep the birds off the feeders. I normally see traffic grow to winter levels near the end of the month, but it's awfully slow at the start. Our weird cold snap brought them in--including two winter visitor species--but that was a short lived thing. And now the only birds I really see are the Carolina Wrens, the Tufted Titmice, and to a lesser extent Mourning Doves, Northern Cardinals and Downy Woodpeckers. This gang are totally dominating the feeder scene, and in the case of the wrens and titmice everything else in between. The wrens seem eager enough to be near us, but the Titmice scold me everywhere I go. These are strange days indeed, but thanks to these clever and fascinating birds, not lonely ones.
