This was pretty disturbing: saw this sight on a greenway walk in our neighboring city this Saturday. A homeowner put out bird boxes and feeders mere inches above the ground. Every one of these is close to the woodline. Bottom line: easy pickings for ambush predators. It's sad that these well-intentioned people didn't think out what could happen to birds forced so low to the danger zone. I only hope the birds themselves spot the hazards and give this collection a wide berth. What could be done instead? use higher shepherd's hooks instead of the gnome variety. Stay away from the treeline. A better site would have been on the other side of the greenway--closer to their home! And predator guards would help even more if altitude is a problem. Let's hope we don't see more of these!
