Songs of Spring

Like a switch was thrown, the birdsong is back! My pre-sunrise chores were today greeted by a symphony of territorial calls. What a fabulous thing to hear after a long, cold winter absence! Loudest of all were these characters: the Tufted Titmice were seemingly everywhere. But I also heard Carolina Wrens and a lone Cardinal. It must be that the length of day is just right, prompting the dormant instinctive behavior. And surely also the birds are investigating possible nest sites, scoping out the best food sources, and marking out places to obtain nest building materials. But first order of business is to establish those territories and get the attention of the ladies. Spring is one notch closer!
