Today the weary warrior returned home to find this handsome specimen gorging at the front yard platform feeder. Yup. Brown Headed Cowbird. We birder types are trained to dislike them: they being brood parasites especially of neotropical migrants. Yet, at an instinctive level, we find them to be striking creatures with the most liquid call note. It's something of a fight within me to condemn them. Even the brood parasitism is in their nature, a behavior widened only because we opened so much farmland in days of yore. So I avoided chasing him off. I didn't begrudge him a free meal. Maybe I won't even see him again. But buddy...I'll suffer ye a little longer if you pick on species who can handle you in a fair fight. Okay?
