Goldfinches in Top Form

Our family group of Gluttobirds, ... I mean American Goldfinches, has been hard at work removing sunflower seed from the feeders. They're definitely using more energy for at least one need, which is molting. The males are almost all in full summer plumage, from the distinctive black tonsure to the dazzling yellow most everywhere else. They won't be breeding very soon: keying off asters means many more weeks of feeding for themselves. Sometime in late June I expect them to start their annual cycle of nesting. They'll be well fed, well groomed, and hopefully in complete form to do this job. As for now, they will only vex me with their prodigious diets!
