Finches, Finches, Everywhere

Twelve pounds of sunflower seed last week. 76,800 individual seeds. Where'd it go? Probably the lion's share went into the bottomless stomachs of these voracious little monsters variously called "House Finches" or "Hollywood Finches." I counted nine on my front feeders this morning, and not an adult male among them, meaning that I probably had more than a dozen of them around. So...lovely. We have one or more family groups, and the breeding season went very well for them, and they're eating us out of house and home. That's gotten me to think about a little tough love and cutting off the sunflower seed for a few weeks. Their young look to be in pretty good shape and diversifying their diet with some natural selections would be a pretty good thing. For now, it's finches...everywhere.
