Catbirds Meet Expectations

If we can count on hot summers in the Piedmont, we can just as much count on the delightful presence of Gray Catbirds in the summer. So far they have delivered on expectations and make our days just a little more interesting. Our tribe has been very active at feeders, perhaps even a bit aggressive, and they're just about everywhere at other times. I hear them meowing all of the time from within the cover of shrubs and trees, and one need only wait a few seconds to see one careening through the yard. We also know of at least one youngster, so the line goes on and I'm very likely to see them again next year. But the end is in sight for 2011: I figure four weeks before these birds leave us for their winter homes along the coast. Must enjoy what's left while we can!
