One Flew The Coop

The young Eastern Bluebird has at last fledged. It seemed a good time yesterday to inspect the post nest box and this time it was empty, except for one lone egg---no doubt a dud. The young bird I observed earlier is gone and there has been no activity at the box for at least three days, that I have seen. And that means the last big nesting adventure here is done for 2011. The bluebirds did quite well, and I'm pleased as punch that the nest box worked out as hoped in its very first season. As far as I know, it's the only certified success I have ever had with the finicky bluebirds! On to the cold season...
