For friends vexed by the most wretched
Sciurus Carolinenis, I continue to express complete satisfaction with good old fashioned technology in the form of these slip-over steel cages. The birds get in (and figure it out pretty quickly): the squirrels do not. I have successfully protected peanuts and peanut butter, for example, for two years with no incidents. This is not to say the squirrels don't try. They do, almost daily. But they have utterly failed here. I think I spent $20 per cage and the two I use are still going strong. The only downside is that squirrels chew off the latex material so a regular repainting of the cage is necessary. But big deal. So looking for simple yet effective ways to shield feeders? try the old ways. Steel.
