It was a little disheartening to see no signs of Ruby Crowned Kinglets this past winter after achieving multi-year success. And the data from the Great Backyard Bird Count suggest that I had no reason not to expect them to be in the area: Kinglets showed up fairly strong in the piedmont. All I can come up with is that it was an offyear and the birds just missed me. Reviewing the past decade's data gives me reason to think that we can have a 2011-12 comeback. Kinglet incidence in the southeast appears to be growing, and there are stronger numbers for my part of the region each year. We should start seeing them, if they do occur, fairly soon. We shall see what comes.
