The Differing Tastes of Nuthatches

For some weeks we have had consistent visitation patterns by our resident nuthatches. But they're consistently different relative to feeders. Here's how. The larger White Breasted Nuthatches are solid hot pepper suet birds. I almost always find them on that feeder. In contrast, the Brown Headed Nuthatches (shown) are the peanut freaks. They are drawn to the split peanuts and to peanut butter, and I never see them poking at the suet. I cannot account for this fascinating taste split. Obviously the WBNs are big on animal proteins---bugs and beef stuff (which is the suet, of course). The BHNs seem to favor more vegetable based foods. Well, hooray for them. I am happy to accomodate both palates. Carry on, nuthatches!
