Still On Territory

It may be the beginning of the cold season, but that's nothing to the resident Carolina Wrens.  These birds stay on territory no matter what.  I was reminded of that fact quite plainly upon return home today.  Wrens, and their co-conspirators the chickadees and titmice, gave me a what-for in the most emphatic fashion: hissing and scolding.  They intend to defend their turf even from the perceived threat of the lumpy guy who fills the feeders.  So much for instant popularity at dinner time!  I wouldn't mind except that the defense calls are so unmusical: not a treat for one with an ear for a fine tune.  And it will go on...all winter.  The tough job of defense knows no season.

Glad we keep them. My mockingbird is large and in charge!
Out there now deciding who can have a bird bath.
