Winter Lineup: Brown Headed Nuthatch

Today's winter bird spotlight is on one of our favorite perennials: the uniquely southeastern Brown Headed Nuthatch.  I like to call this one the "Squeaky Toy" in recognition of its size and its peculiar call note.  These little ones have been readily attracted by suet and even more so by peanuts and peanut butter.  I can almost count on seeing one on casual inspection at the latter feeders.  It also helps us that we're flanked by a number of mature Loblolly Pines that are the natural habitat of these pinewoods specialists.  All in all: delightful visitors that lighten the spirits whenever they're seen or heard.
