Those Darn Goldfinches

One piece of good news for me, dollar-wise, this summer was the absence of the big storm.  That would not be a hurricane, but the storm of finches I feared so much.  Indeed the House Finches built up to enormous numbers at one point, but the American Goldfinches stayed within acceptable bounds at their favorite feeder.  We only have what appears to be a single family group and they are not eating me to death nowadays.  Goldfinches always drive me crazy, either flocking in huge numbers, or vanishing for a long period of time, or staying close enough to hear but not to see.  And suddenly they provide that wonderful balance between glorious appearance and appetite.  I wonder how long that will last?
