As winter sets in across the Piedmont, a very common sight -- especially in car parks! -- are Ring Billed Gulls. Over recent decades these scavengers have expanded their range deep inland. Even still, many people are surprised to see them outside the "seagull" domain. I most often spot them at my favorite fried chicken concession where a large flock congregates. They're understandably attracted to easy pickings. But I see them at lakes and ponds and know that these birds have better eating habits (than I do?) And for now, I am quite content not to find them in my back yard!
