Herons in Plenty

Great Blue Herons are year-rounders in the Piedmont, but for whatever reason they seem especially plentiful in winter.  Perhaps, and I have no recollection of hearing the contrary, more of them pile up closer to the coast in cold months.  I can see half a dozen crossing the causeway over our nearest large lake and that's the readily seen ones.  Our municipal park? who knows, dozens, perhaps.  This bird will never be sighted on our property, but they will fly overhead between watery bodies and I have seen a few this way in recent years.  An amazing sight!
